After a rainy start to the week, high temperatures and mostly sunny skies are expected for the Fourth of July weekend.

Generally dry conditions will continue through Saturday, but there is a chance for isolated thunderstorms on the Fourth of July afternoon, the National Weather Service in Wilmington said. However, most areas will stay dry.

Otherwise, the holiday will get off to a mostly sunny start, with partly cloudy skies in the afternoon on Friday. Highs will be in the upper 80s.

“Since precipitation will not be the main concern through this period, a return to hot temperatures may be the bigger issue — with highs reaching the lower 90s by Saturday,” the forecast read.

Heat indexes will be into the 90s by Sunday, but dewpoints aren’t expected to get high enough to push into the heat advisory area, according to the NWS.

Saturday will be mostly sunny with clear skies in the evening. Low temperatures will be in the 70s.

Sunday will be partly cloudy with a chance of shows and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.

Highs will be back in the low 90s before dropping into the low 70s overnight.
